I came across a very interesting service today – a virtual phone system that works over the internet. It uses the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology. Internet telephony refers to communications services — voice, facsimile, and/or voice-messaging applications — that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network.
The only thing you need for that, are phones and an internet connection. You don’t need special hardware or anything else to maintain it. Apparently there are a few companies around that provide that service, but I found a link where RingCentral lets you try out their system for 30 days for free: A virtual PBX system with voicemail and Internet Fax. RingCentral Online – Free Trial plus 10% Off (It took me a while but in the end I found a link that also gives you 10% off.)
It was voted Editors’ Choice of PCMagazine – which kind of says all. When you sign up for RingCentral, you immediately get your own Toll Free 800 number or a Local Area Code phone number. – Or, you can transfer your existing phone number into RingCentral. Who really profit from a service like that are small businesses that otherwise couldn’t afford features like that. They have good web tutorials (including video) that help you get started as well.
With this great service you can answer calls on your existing mobile, home and office phones, or even on your PC. You can also use RingCentral to send and receive faxes. (You also won’t miss features like extensions, hold music, keeps track of voice mail – showing both new and saved messages.)
